The detailed technical explanation is probably that I am an idiot, and
had set up the list on the new server with a "X-No-Archive: yes" header,
which is interpreted by Gmane. I have now removed this header.
However, according to the Gmane documentation, a X-No-Archive header
should mean that the messages disappear after 14 days, and I haven't seen
them appear at all, so there might be more to it. The present message
will also be a test: if it does not appear on Gmane, then the brokenness
is somewhere else and I will investigate more.
