How to alt-init Lubuntu?

Hi all,

I tried to alt-init Lubuntu 15.04, and as a starting point, added
init=/bin/bash to see where I would pop up and what I had to do. It came
to a subset shell that looked something like busybox, and it appeared
to me I was still in the initramfs. I tried using switch_root to mount
the root partition, but for some reason (a week ago, I dont remember)
that didn't work either.

I tried removing the initrd= line from grub, and putting noinitrd on the
kernel line, but that just kernel panicked. It was like before the
initramfs this thing didn't have the drivers to read an ordinary ext4
partition.

Have any of you had experience with situations like this, and what
steps did you take to figure out how to alt-init it.

Thanks,

SteveT
